biography
Vashti Alexander was born on December 17th, 2007, at the L&M Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. His mother was 15 years old at the time; his father, an older man, had long since abandoned her, disappearing without a trace in order to avoid legal trouble associated with statutory rape. For the first few years of his life, Vashti was raised primarily by his grandparents, as his mother was unable to provide him with proper care at her age. The family resided in Fairwater, CT.
Vashti quickly developed an intense craving for attention, particularly directed towards his mother, who — having a long history of mental health concerns, including multiple inpatient stays for suicide attempts and treatment-resistant depression, and having no desire to have had a child in the first place — was relatively uninterested in her own son. She cared for him out of obligation only, offering no more affection and care than absolutely necessary, going so far as to outright ignore him entirely during particularly bad periods of depression. She did not tend to any of his emotional needs. The environment in which she raised her son was, also, very unclean — mostly as a result of execusive dysfunction, again caused by her depression. Vashti, although very young, was certainly aware of his mother's lack of interest in him. He was very clingy with her and often acted out in various ways in an attempt to garner her affection.
Before he had even hit puberty, Vashti had grown deeply insecure of his appearance, being overweight for his age and height at the time. He began purposefully restricting his eating — starting as young as 11 years old. This functioned as yet another means of seeking his mother's care, testing the assumption that part of her distaste for him stemmed from his appearance — this was not necessarily untrue, although it stemmed more from his visual similarity to his father than his weight. This self-induced limitation of his diet would remain in place for the rest of his life, eventually leading to a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa in Vashti's early adulthood.
Around the same time that Vashti entered middle school, his mother introduced him to her boyfriend at the time, a man named Andrew. Vashti immediately resented him for his presence in his mother's life; he felt as though his mother cared more about Andrew than she did her own son (which was not untrue), and he came to despise Andrew for what he percieved as the man "stealing" his mother from him. At some point, Vashti and his mother moved out of her parents' home and into Andrew's house. Then she and Andrew married.
Initially, Andrew attempted to build a relationship with Vashti, but after repeated, consistent attempts to repell him, he essentially gave up on the idea of he and Vashti ever being friends. He resolved himself to being simply a parent, whether Vashti liked it or not. Interactions between the two remained tense and inconsistent.
Vashti had already begun to retreat into himself. Admittedly, he did not have any friends to begin with — but now he was isolated from his family as well. He had accepted that his mother did not care for him. It seemed her relationship with Andrew had encouraged her to finally try reaching out to connect with her son, but at that point, it was far too late. Vashti was no longer interested. Instead, he had turned his focus towards the internet as his primary means of interaction with others. He spent most of his time outside of school alone in his room.
When Vashti was 13 years old, his mother committed suicide via overdose. Despite the difficult nature of their relationship, Vashti was still extremely affected by her death — she was his mother, after all. The event served as a sort of catalyst. Vashti spiraled. It was around this time that he began self-harming, and his disordered eating worsened so harshly that, at this point, he was eating just barely 700 calories a day at the most.
