Smug, perpetually amused terminal illness fetishist and sexual predator. Rarely does Mel ever drop his irritating smile. His strength, inappropriately casual demeanor, lack of respect for authority, rules, and consequences, and manipulative, invasive behavior make him an altogether dangerous, unsettling man, especially for the vulnerable people he purposefully seeks out in order to take advantage of.

Personality

Mel is a strange man — outwardly, he is extremely hard to read. His face falls, by default, into a sort of half-smirk, as though he's repressing amusement. He laughs often and treats most things said to him as though they're jokes, even when they're obviously not. His demeanor shifts on rare occasions, including when he's particularly embarrassed, angry, or aroused; otherwise, he's always smiling.

Mel has zero respect for authority and thinks of himself as above consequences and morals. He believes wholly that he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants — his only restrictions are self-imposed and for his own benefit. He often feels as though he's the strongest presence in any given room — which is often purposeful, considering he surrounds himself with those weaker than him — and if that's threatened in any way, he gets antsy. Typically, though, he is confident (overly so, even) and casual, no matter the situation, to the point of rudeness. He comes across as though he's incapable of feeling shame, guilt, or embarrassment as a whole — and he gets self-conscious so rarely that this assumption might as well be the truth.

When Mel wants something, he becomes extremely persistent, which easily escalates to use of force when he loses patience. He doesn't typically get very violent — but he does use his size and strength to his advantage, intimidating others by blocking their path, grabbing at them, or pushing them around.

He is also verbally forceful, in the sense that he can be incredibly blunt and rude, usually on purpose. He doesn't necessarily dominate conversation, but he draws attention regardless. Manipulation is a common tactic of his. He frequently weaponizes percieved insecurities to shame others into doing what he wants, or latches onto mistakes with intent to humiliate, or vaguely suggests something, only to turn around when it's acknowledged and pretend that it was wholly the other party's idea. He is entertained by causing discomfort, but he avoids pushing it to a point where he'd lose access to people he wants to keep around.

He is not shy about his intentions, especially with regards to sexual intent or attraction. He has a habit of staring in such a way that his perversion immediately becomes blatant, even when the circumstances make such thoughts entirely inappropriate to express.

Trivia

  • His family owns six massive dogs, poorly trained and kept off-leash, allowed to roam their property as they please, and adding to the extremely crowded nature of an already overpopulated home.
  • His home is, to put it bluntly, a hoarder house. So many possessions and so much trash are contained within that it is nearly unnavigable to people outside the family.
  • He drives a blue and white 1982 Ford F-150. It's sort of scuffed-up, and both the bed of the truck and the interior are cluttered with sundry items. Mostly trash in the front and passenger seat.
  • He keeps loose change in a cupholder in his truck.
  • He smokes. He prefers Pall Malls. He doesn't really like menthols. He also drinks, and he's had his share of reckless, blackout-drunk mishaps over the years.
  • He has a habit of shoplifting and otherwise stealing things that he has no need for — the effects of his mother's hoarding disorder.
  • He has a very big appetite.
  • He sunburns easily.

History

Mello "Mel" Yevanson was born to Dennise and William "Bill" Yevanson on July 17th, 1958, in a more rural part of Connecticut.

childhood (1958-1975)

Mel was never a very well-behaved child; he had a habit of running off and getting into trouble from the time he was able to walk on his own. Of his parents, his father, Bill, was the stricter of the two — his mother, Dennise, was very lax in comparison, and essentially allowed Mel to get away with anything he wanted, often at her own expense, as Bill easily became frustrated with her style of parenting.

Mel was four years old at the time of the birth of his sister, Birdie, in 1962. Mel loved Birdie from the start. He acted as a guiding figure to her — to the best of his ability, of course, being so young — and was very attached to her. The two roughhoused frequently.

In 1966, when Mel was a mere eight years old, Bill made a sudden disappearance. His body was found five days later. He'd committed suicide — the culmination of years of intense depression. Birdie was too young to understand what had happened, but Mel got a better gist of it. Despite his awareness, he was shockingly unbothered by the death of his father, at least outwardly, and resisted attending funeral and memorial services in the wake of Bill's death.

Even before the birth of her children, Dennise displayed a concerning, developing hoarding problem. This and her anxious disposition both worsened sharply after the death of her husband. These hoarding habits rubbed off onto her children, more so with Birdie than with Mel.

Mel was around 13 years old when the first glimpse of his sexual interest in the terminally ill became apparent. He frequently visited the library at his school and the town's public library, though he wasn't a big reader — he really only liked flipping through the pages of illustrated books. He managed to stumble upon a few medical textbooks and dictionaries, and from there, he became utterly obsessed with them, particularly with sections related to cancer. He ended up ripping out the relevant pages and images — as opposed to taking the whole books — and stashed them in his bedroom, where he pored over them time and time again. By that point, the interest had blossomed into a fixation, and then became a fetish.

Mel dropped out of high-school at the age of 17 and immediately began working at a scrapyard.

employment by Sputnik (1990-1995)

Mel eventually found his way into employment by one Sputnik "Nix" Zavodchikov, a fetish phtographer and filmmaker with a particular focus on anorexics. Throughout the years prior to their meeting, Mel's fetish became a dominant force in his life — he often sought out anorexics, because they were an alternative option that served as a suitable replacement for the cancer patients he held so much interest in. He'd thus far been totally unable to find anyone that fit his fetish, so he had to settle for the next best thing.

As a result of that, he ended up working for Sputnik, assisting in his studio and with the subjects of the fetish content, and later participating in the filming of snuff, as Sputnik steadily deteriorated. It seemed Mel had no qualms about ending the lives of others.

Throughout his employment, Mel made repeated, invasive sexual advances towards Sputnik, drawn in by his bone-thin appearance, brought about by his orthorexia. The man declined and rejected the attempts time and time again — though he was attracted to Mel, he was far too repressed to engage with him sexually.

Mel became more and more frustrated as Sputnik continued to refuse to give him what he wanted, seeing it as stubbornness — playing hard-to-get. His pursuit ended when he showed up to Sputniks apartment one day, where he first coerced the man into one sexual act, then escalated into outright raping him during the same visit.

Despite what he'd done, Mel remained under Sputnik's employment, and a sexual relationship was established between them. Mel also encouraged — manipulated, really — Sputnik to avoid any sort of recovery from his orthorexia, as the man's deteriorating physical condition was the primary reason for Mel's interest. Sputnik feared him enough that he didn't fire him, even with the frequency with which he was now forced into sex with Mel.

Sputnik remained as Mel's favorite of sorts until, at some point, he unknowingly brought a terminally ill leukemia patient named Maude into his studio to be a subject of his photography, under the impression that they were an anorexic. Mel latched onto Maude, essentially tossing Sputnik aside to prioritize this new toy of his. Mel was persistant, forceful, and outright predatory towards Maude in the months leading up to their inevitable death, repeatedly stalking and raping them while leaving no room for them to escape, even going so far as to assault them while they were in the hospital for treatment.

Once Maude had passed, Mel rebounded right back to Sputnik, who'd returned to being resistant towards his advances, despite the intense jealousy he'd felt towards Maude for the attention Mel had given them. This time, he was quick to give in, because Mel had no qualms about returning to being sexually aggressive towards him.

Also during his time working for Sputnik, Mel became aquainted with another employee, a man called Mastiff. Despite feeling somewhat intimidated by Mastiff, Mel was friendly with him. The relationship took a turn for the worst when, for the purposes of Sputnik's films, Mastiff raped Mel on-camera.

arrest & incarceration (1995-)

In 1995, Sputnik acquired ownership of a boy named Mutt, sex trafficked from a young age and sold once he'd become too old — that is to say, 25 — to be desirable to his previous "owner." Sputnik's intent was to make Mutt the "star" of a horrific act of violence, filming the poor thing's rape, torture, and eventual murder. Mel was there at the intended time of the filming, tasked with participating in the act — he, of course, wasn't all too conflicted about that.

The plan went awry when Sputnik's downstairs neighbor and former best friend arrived on-scene and shot Sputnik, putting an end to both his life and to the torment he had been and would continue to be inflicting on those weaker than himself.

Mel, being an accomplice, was arrested for his participation in Sputnik's various illicit activities (alongside the other employees, including, eventually, Mastiff). He pled not guilty, testifying at his own trial — a decidedly stupid idea brought about by his overconfidence, as tends to be the case — and he was handed a guilty verdict, carrying a sentence made all the more lengthy because of his resistance to admit to his guilt.

Mel's overconfience and lack of care for consequence immediately shifted upon his incarceration, when the reality of the situation struck him. Not only the harsh conditions of the carceral system on its own — Mel was incarcerated alogngside Mastiff.

Mel's time in prison was spent enduring sexual abuse and humiliation at Mastiff's hands. He remained in contact with his mother and sister throughout.

Relationships

Mel's mother. Dennise's anxious disposition has worsened over the years — she rarely leaves the house at all. She is wholly incapable of saying no to Mel, and she always has been.

She's also entirely unaware of what Mel gets up to outside of the house; she knows nothing about his proclivity for the terminally ill, nor his employment by Sputnik, nor his moral bankruptcy. She doesn't become aware of how horrible her son can be until he's arrested, and even then, she's resistant to the idea that he'd really done anything he was accused of.

Mel, of course, is fond of his mother — she birthed and raised him, after all — but he is somewhat irritated by her unreasonable fears and anxieties. He doesn't quite understand why she behaves the way she does.

Mel's father. In the eight years of Mel's life where he was alive and present, he was the only person who ever tried to contain his misbehavior. This was, of course, ineffective. Most of his frustration with Mel's actions was taken out on Dennise, instead.

Mel was never particularly interested in his father. He wasn't fond of the authority Bill attempted to impose upon him. When the man died, Mel felt, in all honesty, vindicated — he'd essentially won, in his mind, and his lack of respect for authority was inflated when the first person who'd ever tried to tell him what to do was removed from his life.

Nowadays, Mel doesn't pay much thought to his Bill, unless Dennise or Birdie bring him up.
